Busy start to the new term for Orchard Hill College Learners in Sutton
Learners across the Sutton region have enjoyed a busy and exciting start to the new academic year at Orchard Hill College, throwing themselves into a wide range of practical learning opportunities designed to build skills, confidence and independence.
From cooking and digital skills to gardening and enterprise projects, learners have wasted no time settling back into college life and embracing new challenges. Throughout the first week of term, learners have been developing valuable life and employability skills while taking part in engaging, hands-on activities both in and out of the classroom.
One highlight has been where learners have been exploring product design and production. Learners have been learning tie-dye techniques, creating colourful and unique items that will be made available for sale. The project has given them the opportunity to understand the process of developing products for customers while gaining experience in creativity, teamwork and business skills.
Food preparation has also been high on the agenda, with learners developing their kitchen skills. As part of the programme, learners are also making regular trips to local shops to purchase ingredients for their cooking lessons. These visits provide valuable opportunities to develop independence, budgeting, money-handling and communication skills, while helping learners understand how to plan and prepare for cooking activities from start to finish.
Some of the delicious baked goods are being sold at the Community Blend Café, based at the Sutton Life Centre, giving learners a chance to see the results of their hard work while engaging with the local community.
The café continues to provide a real-world learning environment where learners gain practical experience in customer service and hospitality. From welcoming visitors and taking orders to serving customers and supporting day-to-day operations, learners are developing key workplace skills and growing in confidence as they help run the café for local residents and visitors.
Digital skills sessions have also been keeping learners busy, with learners enhancing their knowledge of technology and building confidence using digital tools that will support them both in everyday life and future employment opportunities.
As the academic year gets underway, Orchard Hill College is looking forward to an exciting term ahead, with many more opportunities for learners to develop their skills, achieve their goals and make a positive contribution to their local community.
