Students can access Art Therapy, Dramatherapy or Music Therapy whilst at Orchard Hill College, depending on need and availability. The Creative Arts Therapies are established psychological clinical interventions, which are delivered by Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Therapists, to help students of all abilities. No previous creative art experience is necessary.
We have created the following to offer support to students:
This audio relaxation induction has been created for students of Orchard Hill College, by one of our Music Therapists, although it can be used by anybody (students, staff, families).
You do not need to lie down to access this relaxation, but if you are able you will have a more holistic experience. It is best if listened to through headphones or ear buds.
For those students who need physical support this can be provided for them throughout the induction with gentle, positive touch, encouraging awareness of the different body parts being relaxed. Softly place a hand on their chest / tummy for the breathing exercises.
This relaxation is designed for use at any time. It lasts around 10 minutes and is to relax at times of worry, stress or anxiety.
About Creative Arts Therapies at Orchard Hill College
Our Creative Arts Therapies are offered as a specialist clinical intervention within either 1:1, paired or group clinical contexts. Art, Drama or Music Therapy is offered upon specific criteria around emotional or mental health needs being identified on a student’s EHCP.
Students who have a need specified on their EHCP will receive a specialist service of, usually, 1:1/ paired sessions on a weekly basis. They will have an identified high-risk need for support with their psychological, emotional, cognitive, physical, communicative, or social needs; such as a dual diagnosis, challenging behaviour, have suffered a bereavement or trauma, regression of disability or mental health need.
Examples of input from CATs at this level would include:
It may also include:
Referral for Creative Arts Therapies
Should CAT not be indicated on a student’s EHCP, an internal referral should be made to the College CAT service, and a request for EHCP funding submitted. This may be the case if, for example, there has been any deterioration or change to the state of a student’s emotional health because of a life-changing, significant, or traumatic event in their personal life.
The Creative Arts Therapists will also support families with external referrals or signposting as appropriate.
