Orchard Hill College invests in staff excellence at Development Planning Day
Orchard Hill College brought staff together for an inspiring Development Planning Day hosted at Kingston University, celebrating professional growth, collaboration, and a shared commitment to delivering outstanding outcomes for students.
The day began with a warm welcome over tea and coffee, followed by opening remarks from Supported Intern Skylar, whose contribution set an inclusive and empowering tone for the event. Staff then heard from Executive Principal Kelly Phillips, who outlined Orchard Hill College’s strategic vision and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to continuous, ambitious, improvement and innovation.
A series of engaging and informative sessions followed throughout the morning. Dr Asha Patel provided an update on the Mental Health Foundation Project, highlighting the college’s proactive approach to wellbeing. Ben Walsh, Principal of St Philip’s School, delivered valuable insights into the latest OFSTED framework, ensuring staff remain informed and confident in delivering high-quality provision.
Colleagues enjoyed a moving dance performance from students from the Southwark region. The performance conveyed how young people with SEND don’t always feel heard and that decisions are made for them and then grew into an up tempo celebration of what they can achieve. It was a moving performance and received a standing ovation from the packed auditorium
Kirsty Cottrell, Principal at Orchard Hill College, shared key updates on the education White Paper, offering context on national priorities and what they mean for the organisation.
A highlight of the morning was a keynote address from Andrew Patterson, who inspired attendees with thought-provoking perspectives on resilience and purposeful reflection. The session was followed by a presentation from Sarah-Jane Lummes on the London Marathon and its fundraising impact for Orchard Hill College.
The event also recognised the exceptional contributions of staff through the Staff Awards, presented by Orchard Hill College Principal, Craig Van-de-Velde, celebrating dedication, innovation and excellence across the college.
After a well-earned lunch in the university’s onsite food hall, the afternoon continued with the much-anticipated “Region of the Year” award, recognising outstanding regional performance and teamwork. The award went to the Southwark region and the Head of College, Karen Essen received the award with her delighted team.
The day concluded with interactive activities fostering collaboration and team building.
The Development Planning Day was a resounding success, reinforcing Orchard Hill College’s investment in its people. By bringing staff together to share knowledge, celebrate achievements, and align on future priorities, the event demonstrated Orchard Hill College’s unwavering commitment to both staff development and student success.
