Southwark Learners make a positive start to the new academic year
Learners across Orchard Hill College’s Southwark region have made a fantastic start to the new academic year, throwing themselves into a wide range of activities designed to build confidence, independence and valuable life skills.
Learners have been enjoying a varied programme that includes horticulture, yoga, cooking, basketball, money management, film-making and regular community-based activities. The busy timetable has helped learners settle into their routines while developing new skills and strengthening existing ones.
In horticulture sessions, learners have been exploring the sensory side of gardening, using and feeling different gardening tools, handling plants and experiencing a variety of textures, scents and natural materials. These activities support sensory development while encouraging learners to engage with the outdoor environment.
Cooking lessons have also proved popular, with learners developing their independence by visiting local shops to purchase ingredients before returning to college to prepare meals in the kitchen. These sessions help learners build confidence in budgeting, shopping, communication and food preparation, while also learning about nutrition, food safety and teamwork.
As part of their money management lessons, learners are putting their skills into practice through regular trips into the local community. Shopping visits provide opportunities to compare prices, make purchasing decisions and manage budgets, helping learners develop important skills for everyday life.
Physical wellbeing has also been a key focus, with learners taking part in yoga sessions to support relaxation and mindfulness, alongside basketball activities that encourage teamwork, communication and exercise.
Learners have also been exploring their creativity through film-making projects. One learner has been developing skills in filming and content creation, gaining hands-on experience while building confidence, communication skills and technical knowledge.
Beyond the classroom, learners have been out and about attending events, exploring the local area and taking part in community activities. These experiences provide valuable opportunities to develop social skills, increase independence and engage with the wider community.
Staff have been delighted by the enthusiasm shown by learners since the start of term, with many embracing new challenges and opportunities.
Karen Esson, Head of College for the Southwark region said: “It has been wonderful to see learners returning and starting with such enthusiasm and positivity. They have been incredibly busy taking part in a wide range of activities both in college and within the local community. Our learners are building valuable life skills every day and settling into the new academic year exceptionally well.”
