Students get creative at Sonsoles Print Studio
Students from our Southwark region swapped the classroom for spending the day at a Screen Printing Workshop run by Sonsoles Print Studio. And yes, it got messy in all the best ways, with a staff member screen printing their badge by accident!
The visit was sparked by one of our students who won a Jack Petchey Award and chose to spend her prize money on a screen-printing experience she could share with her friends.
Before the workshop even began, the students worked up their own stencil designs and sent them over to the studio. Sonsoles then cut the stencils and set everything up on the presses ready for their arrival.
The designs were brilliant – everything from butterflies and roses to cats, Pokémon characters, and bold abstract shapes. A real mix of personalities, which is exactly what you want when the creative juices are flowing.
The art (and patience) of screen printing
The team at Sonsoles guided the students through the full process:
- Choosing and layering colours
- Applying just the right amount of ink
- Using a squeegee to push the colour through their stencil
- Carefully lining up the paper for that all-important second layer
After a few practice runs, confidence quickly kicked in. Students experimented with colour combinations, tried out different pressures, and really started to understand how small changes create completely different results.
A creative win
By the end of the workshop, everyone walked away with their own printed artwork – and a new appreciation for just how much skill goes into making great screen prints. A couple of our students were complete naturals and future screen printers in the making.
