Sutton Life Centre has been shortlisted for a New London Architecture (NLA) Award 2026 in the Education category, recognising the innovative redevelopment that has created a specialist learning environment for Orchard Hill College learners while retaining important community services for local residents.

The shortlist celebrates projects that are helping to shape the future of London through outstanding design, collaboration and social impact. The transformed facility, delivered through a partnership between Sutton Council and Orchard Hill College, has been recognised for its pioneering approach to bringing together specialist education, community services and opportunities for residents under one roof.

At the heart of the development is Orchard Hill College’s newest college centre, providing high-quality education and training opportunities for young people aged 16 to 25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The centre was created in response to increasing demand for local specialist post-16 provision, enabling more young people to learn and develop closer to home.

Alongside the College provision, Sutton Life Centre also includes a Preparation for Adulthood Hub, community library, Community Blend Café, sensory garden and sports facilities, ensuring the building remains a vibrant asset for the wider community.

The NLA shortlisting recognises not only the quality of the building’s transformation, but also the vision behind the project.

Kelly Phillips, CEO of Orchard Hill College, said:

“We are delighted that Sutton Life Centre has been shortlisted for an NLA Award. This recognition celebrates the power of partnership and a shared commitment to creating opportunities for young people with SEND.

“The development has enabled Orchard Hill College to expand its specialist provision in Sutton, giving more young people access to life-changing education, training and preparation for adulthood opportunities within their local community. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved alongside Sutton Council and the positive impact the centre is already having on the lives of our learners and local residents.”

Since opening its new college centre within the building, Orchard Hill College has helped establish Sutton Life Centre as a place where education, inclusion and community come together. The facility accommodates up to 77 learners and provides specialist teaching, practical training and employability-focused learning environments designed to support young people as they prepare for adulthood, employment and greater independence.

Winners of the NLA Awards 2026 will be announced at the NLA Awards ceremony in November.
